THE CANCER THAT IS TREATABLE (1)

Fight Against Prostate Cancer. PHOTO By: www.huffingtonpost.co.uk

A man in his early fifties was wheeled (because he has lost his ability to walk) into the urology clinic for consultation, he was referred from the hematology unit where he's been transfused at least 5 units of blood, yea he was that severely anemic.

It turned out that his numerous problems stemmed straight from the prostate - he had prostate cancer which had festered and metastasized to his bone causing him to lose his walking ability and also suppressed his bone marrow leading to the severe anemia he had. subsequently the prostate cancer feeder was removed but the damage had already been done, he was already paralyzed.

The prostate is an organ of reproduction that is found only in men and it has a habit of becoming enlarged or cancerous, and prostate cancer is one that can be completely eradicated if found on time. it is usually screened for by carrying out a test called prostate specific antigen (PSA), its normal blood value is 1-4ng/ml. an elevated value could indicate cancerous events for which further evaluation would be carried out.

It is advised that men who are 40 years and above should do a PSA analysis every six months. in fact i think its criminal to be a man in 40 years and above age bracket and not have your prostate checked.

The man above could have avoided the stress, the energy expended, the resources and time wasted, the damage done if he had walked into a health facility to have a routine check.
it becomes so painful to see someone go through that much pain and suffering for something that could easily have been avoided.

CHOLERA

The first cholera outbreak was recorded in (1817–24), also known as the first Asiatic cholera pandemic, began near Calcutta and spread throughout Southeast Asia to the Middle East, eastern Africa and the Mediterranean coast. - www.wikipedia.org

It isn't that common anymore, but there's a need for us to know about this dreaded infection.
Cholera also known as Vibrio cholerae is a potentially fatal bacterial infection of the small intestine caused by consuming water or food that has been contaminated.
Symptoms may not occur in all that has been affected, but those who do will usually experience:
  • Severe, watery diarrhea
  • Feeling and being sick
  • Stomach cramps
Symptom's generally develops within  few days of infection, although they can sometimes occur after few hours.

Without treatment, the combination of diarrhea and vomiting can cause a person to quickly become dehydrated and go into shock (where there's a sudden massive drop in blood pressure). In the most severe cases, cholera can be fatal.

Causes Of Cholera

The bacteria causing cholera is know as Vibrio cholera, it is  a bacterial infection usually found in water or food that is contaminated by feces from a carrier.

Sources include:
  • Vegetables washed or grown with water containing infected human wastes.
  • Foods and drinks not properly processed sold by street vendors
  • Local water supplies
  • Fish and seafood caught in waters polluted with sewage that are under-cooked.
  • Ice made from local water supplies.

When contaminated food or water is consumed by a person, the bacteria release a toxin in the intestines that produces severe diarrhea.

  • Use and Drink safe water. (Always make sure your water is boiled and filtered well, and get a good safe source of water, make sure your kitchen and utensils are cleaned with safe water.)
  • Use a latrine or bury your feces, do not pollute a body of water by defecating into it.
  • Wash hands with soap and safe water.(Make sure you wash your hands before you make food or eat, wash it with liquid soap after cleaning your child bottom or yours, also after using the latrine or toilet.)
  • Clean up safely (Wash all things before you use them).

DEHYDRATION

Dehydration is the loss of water from the body, this occurs when more water or fluid is exiting the body than they are consumed (taken in) it also occurs due to excess urination, sweating and abnormal causes of vomiting or diarrhea.

When the normal water content of your body is reduced, it upsets the balance of minerals in your body, which affects it. Water makes up for over two-thirds of the healthy human body. It lubricates the joints and eyes. it helps in digestion, flushes out toxins, and keeps the skin healthy.
Some of the early warning signs of dehydration include:
  • Thirst
  • Dry Mouth
  • Weakness
  • Dark colored urine
  • Sparingly passing urine
All this are great symptoms of dehydration, it is advisable  to stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluid.

If you can consume the amount of water your body needs on a daily basis, which is 1.9litres or even more, that's a great start to kicking Dehydration out.

Dehydration (Chronic) can affect your kidney function and increase the risk of kidney or bladder stones. This can also lead to constipation and muscle damage.

STOMACH ULCER

Firstly, Let's Define Ulcer. "Ulcer is an open sore on an external or internal surface of the body, caused by a break in the skin or mucous membrane which fails to heal. Ulcers range from small, painful sores in the mouth to bedsores and serious lesions of the stomach or intestine"

Eight out of ten patients that walk into the clinic/Hospital claim they have ulcer. Even though some of them are misinformed. They are actions and lifestyles that predispose to developing ulcer and having knowledge of these factors will help in preventing and combating this menace.
They include
  • Inappropriate or long term use of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory drugs (NSAID's), Such as Aspirin, and Ibuprofen.
NSAID'S are a group of painkillers. And by inappropriate, i mean prolonged use, wrong dosage and administration, wrong combinations.
This is what happens when you go to the “chemists” for treatment.
A young girl once came to me with Drugs she was given by a chemist for pain due to a knife cut for verification and when i saw the drugs and how she was taking them, i was amazed. The man had given her two (2) Cards Of Diclofenac with different trade names, 100mg each, and a card of Ibuprofen to take two (2) Tabs three times daily, and the was no advice to take with food, this is outrageous.
This is why it is necessary to visit the Hospital for prescriptions, and if the drugs get finished, the doctor would need to review the prescription, do not take this class of drugs for a prolonged time.

H. P is a type of Bacteria. These bacteria can enter your body and live in your digestive tract. It is Spiral in nature, and After many years, they can cause, ulcers in the lining of your stomach or the upper part of your small intestine. For most people, this bacteria causing infections can lead to cancer of the stomach.
You Prevent H. Pylori by making sure you maintain a good hygienic lifestyle.
H. Pylori
  • Cigarette Smoking. “The ministry of Health warns that smokers are liable to die young”, Well this is one of the ways. So it’s simple, Quit Smoking.
  • Alcohol Intake. Am yet to see any good come out of excessive alcohol intake, it causes ULCER, it will be wise to reduce it’s intake.
  • Hyper-acidity in the stomach, this may be related to food consumption, or even alcohol intake.
Symptoms
There are a number of symptoms associated with stomach ulcers. If you experience any of this symptoms below, see your doctor.

2.  Pain in the stomach.
3.  Lust of appetite due to pain.
4.  Nausea or vomiting.
5.  Blood in your feces.

Dangers Of ''Herbal Bitters'' and ''Cleansers''

A young man was wheeled into the emergency room by his friends, he was in no obvious distress, and when asked by the ER doctor what his complaint was, his friends answered that his 'thing' was standing.
With a stifled laugh the young female doctor made to go inspect and underneath the wrapper tied round the man's waist was a penis so perfectly erect like a soldier on parade.
The young man proceeded to narrate his story thus;

"I was having malaria typhoid, then I took rozo bitters and slept, when I woke later, my thing
Was standing, I thought it was normal so I slept back, when I woke again in the morning it was still standing and had become painful. I was ashamed to go to the hospital so I went to a small clinic by my house, they gave me pain relief and asked me to come to the specialist hospital. I went back home and stayed because i was ashamed to enter public transport."
He went to the hospital five days later when the thing refused to go down.
I can actually understand his shame, I mean, who wants to walk around with an erected penis.
When he was done narrating his history, no one believed him, everyone thought he intentionally took something to have stamina in the other room.

The consultant urologist insisted to see what he took before operating . when he sent for it, turns out he was right because the cleanser claimed to cure everything, from malaria, typhoid to erectile dysfunction and a host of other things.
The young  man had what is medically known as priapism and given his ordeal had to be operated on, the chances of that 'thing' standing again is slim. He's a handsome young man and the girls will flock but he may remain incapacitated as far as the other room is concerned.
The bitters and cleansers all claim to cure everything, hypertension, diabetes, staphylococcus and others, beware of any such substance that can do it all, its risks far outweighs its benefits.

It is always safer to take prescribed medications.

Home Management of febrile convulsion

The on-call doctor was just settling  down to rest a bit after having attended to an emergency,
"Doctor! Doctor!! Pls epp me" came the cry of a distressed mother bearing a child of about a year old.
"What happened"
"Na corvortion" her own way of saying convulsion
"Put him on the couch"
The mother dropped an unresponsive child on the couch
On examining the baby, there was a metal spoon in between his teeth, there was no sign of breathing, the chest was silent, pulses were absent, the pupils of the eye were fixed and dilated. This could only mean one thing, the child was dead.
Well, this child had high fever for 2 days and then convulsed on the third day, in the course of convulsing, the mother gave him herbal concoction.
Apparently the child had febrile convulsion and choked on the concoction he was given. Really sad because convulsion does not kill

What then is febrile convulsion and how do you recognize it, it's simple.
 Febrile convulsion is convulsion occurring in a child aged 3 months to 5 years due to fever of extracranial origin. This means the fever is caused by diseases not related to the brain. These diseases include;
  • Malaria
  • pneumonia
  • Measles
  • Tonsillitis
  • Typhoid
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Over wrapping a child
So what should you do during the seizure?
Remain calm, check your watch to time the convulsion, it typically lasts few seconds to 10 minutes.
Remove the child from harms way, remove every object that could hurt the child and place him where he won't fall off.

After the seizure
Expose the child and fan him,
Put a washcloth or small towel in tap water and mop the child's body,
give paracetamol (10mg/kg) at the end of the seizure to bring down the fever

What shouldn't you do?
Do not hold the child down during the seizure
Do not use hot or ice water
Do not use metal spoon as this can cause bruises in the child's mouth
Do not try to put drugs, food, water or herbs in baby's mouth as baby can aspirate or even choke on those things.

The good thing is, febrile convulsion doesn't last more than 10 minute,
Doesn't recur within 24hrs
It doesn't have any neurological effect on the child, they continue to develop normally

Note that after doing all of these you still need to go to the hospital for the cause of the fever to be sourced and treated by a doctor.

You can prevent febrile convulsion by springing into action once u notice your child has fever

  1. Mop his body regularly
  2. Give paracetamol (acetaminophen)
  3. Go to the hospital
